Volunteer Spotlight: Jenna Mushro

March 13, 2020 1:00PM

Everything that AMA Minnesota offers would not be possible without the amazing work of our volunteers. Often their work is done behind the scenes. To thank our volunteers and bring their efforts to light, we regularly showcase them in a Volunteer Spotlight.

Meet Jenna Mushro, AMA MN Volunteer Committee volunteer!

Volunteer Since: 2016

Job Title: Communications Manager

Company: RiverSource Life Insurance

1. Why did you decide to become a volunteer with AMA MN?

I decided to become an AMA volunteer to meet other professionals that are passionate about marketing. When I moved back to Minneapolis from Des Moines in 2015, getting involved in AMA MN instantly connected me with like-minded individuals and made the transition so much easier.

2. What do you enjoy most about being a volunteer on your committee?

Volunteering on AMA committees have been extremely valuable. Connecting with people at events is great, but there’s something to be said about the deep connections you make volunteering. I love the opportunity to give back to a non-profit that has taught me so much. I’ve gained leadership skills by leading teams, managing events, attending national AMA conferences, and working with the best in marketing.

3. Why is being a volunteer with AMA MN important to you?

I enjoy meeting with people in the AMA MN community to learn about their volunteer goals and connect them with a committee that they can learn and grow in. Working with awesome committee members also makes the experience fun and exciting, of course.

4. What’s the one thing you wish others knew about volunteering with AMA MN? What makes it unique?

You get from it what you put in. To be a volunteer you don’t have to feel tied to a set number of hours each week or a certain project. If you are up front about your goals, work capacity, and skills, AMA MN allows you to make a volunteer role your own. Also, don’t feel like you have to do something you’re already a rockstar at. If you are a master event planner at your day job, try a gig on the marcomm team to diversify your skills.

5. What is some of the best advice you've received in your career?

Always stay curious. Ask questions. Be you.

6. Besides volunteering, what do you enjoy doing in your free time?

I love taking spin classes, watching Minnesota sports (go Vikings!), and traveling as much as possible. One of my travel goals is to visit at least one different National State Park each year. On the list for 2020 is Banff!
