AMA Presents – An Event Reflection: Collegiate Case Competition 2025 Takeaways
In a post-pandemic world where many students experienced years of remote learning, limited collaboration, and missed opportunities for in-person growth, the 5th Annual MN AMA Collegiate Case Competition stood out as more than just a marketing challenge. It was a powerful reminder of the value of human connection. Hosted back in early April by the Minnesota American Marketing Association at the Carlson School of Management, the event brought together students from across the region to not only solve a real-world business problem from Midco Sports but to reconnect, collaborate, and engage with peers and professionals in ways that many hadn’t experienced in years. For many students, the competition was the first time they could practice real-world networking and collaboration outside an educational, controlled environment.
Workshops and Networking: A Crucial Piece Restored
While the case competition itself was a highlight, many students emphasized how the day’s networking and professional development opportunities made the experience especially meaningful. “Participating in the day’s activities, including workshops and networking with local marketing professionals, was a great addition to the presentations,” said Lilee Surdell of the University of St. Thomas. Another student, James Schueneman, echoed that sentiment, saying, “I learned a lot through the experience… the workshops and networking were very insightful.” For students, these face-to-face conversations and hands-on sessions offered invaluable exposure to industry realities – and a sense of belonging in the professional world they’re preparing to enter.
Collaboration Across Campuses
What stood out most this year wasn’t just the competition; it was the community. Students from different schools connected, supported one another, and shared ideas in ways that felt both refreshing and inspiring. Even amidst the competitive environment, there was a noticeable spirit of collaboration. As Savan Sant of UMD put it, “The greatest moments in life are often because of other people,” capturing the shared pride many students felt in learning and growing together. The event offered something more than just a trophy. It provided a chance to re-engage with peers after years of digital distance.
Hard Work and Human Connection Across Every Team
What stood out most this year wasn’t just the competition; it was the community. Students from schools like the University of St. Thomas, Augsburg University, the University of Minnesota Duluth, the University of Northern Iowa, and others connected, supported one another, and shared ideas in ways that felt both refreshing and inspiring. Even with the competitive environment, there was a noticeable spirit of collaboration and camaraderie. As Jayoung Koo, Augsburg faculty mentor, reflected, “Despite juggling classes, work shifts, and soccer games, [the team] poured their hearts into this project.” This commitment was evident across all participating schools. Savan Sant of UMD captured the sentiment well. “The greatest moments in life are often because of other people,” echoing what many students felt. The event offered more than a trophy – it was a chance to re-engage with peers and mentors after years of digital distance.
Looking Forward: Networking as the New (and Old) Normal
This year’s event was a reminder that marketing is more than metrics and strategy. It goes beyond what can be simply interpreted from a data set – it’s about people. Students left the competition energized by real conversations, new mentors, and a sense of community that’s hard to replicate. We’re deeply grateful to Midco Sports, the Carlson School of Management, Celarity, and all our sponsors and volunteers who made this in-person experience possible. Thank you for helping rebuild the relationships and real-world exposure that students need now more than ever.
