Volunteer Spotlight Kay Weiss

October 07, 2015

Everything the MN AMA offers would not be possible without the amazing work of our volunteers. A lot of the work is done behind the scenes and out of sight. To thank our volunteers and to showcase their hard work, we have a monthly Volunteer Spotlight feature.

How did you get involved as a volunteer with the MN AMA?
I had been doing social media for my old company and wanted to continue. I actually enjoy posting/tweeting more for my company than for myself!

What do you enjoy about volunteering with the MN AMA?
For me, it’s a great creative outlet and any opportunity to meet other people (my fellow volunteers). Volunteering is definitely a case of “the more the merrier.” You have the chance to pick from a range of tasks you might be interested in and can decide how much time you can really commit. Creative or analytical, large commitment or small, in front of the crowd or behind the scenes—there’s really a volunteer opportunity for everyone.

Tell us about your day job.
I’m a communications specialist for two State of Minnesota boards. I’m fairly new to the position; before that I had been in publishing for years (and years). My left brain is learning more about the legislative process (for those who remember “Schoolhouse Rock,” I’ve caught myself humming “I’m just a bill, yes I’m only a bill….”). My right brain is doing design and layout work that I haven’t done since the early days of my career and also web-related work I had done more.

What is your favorite professional or personal development book or blog?
A truly geeky favorite is the blog Occam’s Razor by Avinash Kaushik. The guy makes analytics understandable and funny. He has a gift.

Where would you like to go on your next dream vacation?
Nothing too radical, just Alaska. I’ve had a guidebook since 2007 (pre- all those Alaska television programs) and still haven’t gone. Guidebook will probably still be good; just need to cross out “Mt. McKinley” and write in “Denali.”

What is your spirit animal?
According to the two quizzes I just took, either I’m a wolf or a butterfly. At least I’m consistent.

What do you enjoy doing when you're not working or volunteering?
Photography, running, music, travel—sometimes all at the same time.

Thanks for all of your hard work, Kay!
