Volunteer Spotlight Anne Doucot

November 11, 2015

Everything the MN AMA offers would not be possible without the amazing work of our volunteers. A lot of the work is done behind the scenes and out of sight. To thank our volunteers and to showcase their hard work, we have a monthly Volunteer Spotlight feature.

How did you get involved as a volunteer with the MN AMA?
I had attended a few MN AMA events and thought the speakers were really interesting, and it was great meeting new people, too. I was interested in getting more experience in managing social media and copywriting, and having the opportunity to contribute and learn from others in marketing and advertising.

What do you enjoy about volunteering with the MN AMA?
What I like most about volunteering with the MN AMA is the opportunity to be involved with so many different aspects of the organization. There is a lot of flexibility in trying different areas, so you can really decide how much you want to learn and contribute. And, the people at MN AMA are amazing. It’s a really great group!

I would recommend that others get involved with volunteering with the MN AMA for a few reasons. It’s an opportunity to grow- to learn from doing a new project, and to learn from others who may have skills that you have yet to learn. It’s a great way to meet new people who are interested in the same things that you are interested in- such as being the best they can in their jobs and feeling fulfilled knowing that they are making a difference. We often get so caught up in our day-to-day routines (home, work, homework, etc.), that it’s easy to forget how valuable it can be to step outside our comfort zone and mingle with others who we can learn a little from. It’s a great opportunity to challenge yourself, and as a volunteer, you may feel like you have a little more freedom to get creative.

Tell us about your day job.
I work at an advertising agency in downtown Minneapolis called Pocket Hercules as a project manager (the equivalent of an account manager at this particular agency). I just started in August. What I love about my job is that I get to be the liaison between the creative team and our clients. My job is to prevent and solve problems, and to make our clients feel taken care of. I enjoy making people happy, earning their trust, and making them feel at ease knowing that someone is there to truly help them.

What is your favorite professional or personal development book or blog?
Oh man, there are so many I have on my “need to read” list. One of my favorite books, though, is “Creating Magic: 10 Common Sense Leadership Strategies From a Life at Disney,” by Lee Cockerell.

What was your first job?
My very first job was as an assistant teacher at a private school in St. Paul at age 13. Looking back, it’s crazy to think that I had that job at such a young age. I was responsible for 30 kids, ranging from ages four to nine, during a morning summer program. I had taken an acting and math class at the school the summer before, and the program director had remembered me and offered the position to me later that year. I really enjoyed it, and ended up working as an assistant teacher throughout my teens.

If you were immortal for a day, what would you do?
Hmmm. I would probably have to say that I would want to help others get out of dangerous situations. If I could add a superpower to that, it would be to be able to read people’s minds.

Which celebrity would you like to meet at Starbucks for a cup of coffee? Why?
Tom Hanks. I enjoy watching him in almost any movie. He seems like he would be very interesting to talk to with his vast experiences, and a down-to-earth, overall great guy who doesn’t have a problem doing the right thing, even when it may be hard. Yes, all this from little news snippets, and probably my interpretation based on his character roles. You can just tell when someone’s the real deal.

Thanks for all of your hard work, Anne!
