Volunteer Spotlight Grant Peterson

December 14, 2016

Everything the AMA MN offers would not be possible without the amazing work of our volunteers. A lot of the work is done behind the scenes and out of sight. To thank our volunteers and to showcase their hard work, we have a monthly Volunteer Spotlight feature.

How did you get involved as a volunteer with the AMA MN?
Because I wanted a broad based exposure to the marketing field rather than to a single branch of the field, the AMA was an obvious choice. A friend of mine was the Vice President of Membership and she recruited me as a volunteer on her committee. Since then I have served on the board and continue to stay involved. Through friendships formed and by knowledge gained by attending programs, AMA Minnesota has helped me professionally more than I can say.

Where would you like to go on your dream vacation?
Thailand. The college I went to had a very good international study program so I took advantage of their term in the Far East. I spent three months living with a family in northern Thailand and attended Chiang Mai University. I would like to reconnect with friends there and see the beaches I never got to.

Tell us about your day job.
During the day I work with prospective clients who share their stories of their unmet marketing needs and, in turn, I provide solutions that fulfill those needs. This is also known as business development. It’s a dream job. I get to learn about all kinds of different companies and meet new people all the time.

What do you enjoy doing when you're not working or volunteering?
My wife and I recently enrolled in ballroom dance lessons. It’s not as easy as they make it look and it can make you feel terribly uncoordinated, but when the brain stops over-thinking it and gets synched up with the legs, you’re filled with a sudden sense of achievement and fun replaces frustration.

What is your favorite professional or personal development book or blog?
The HubSpot and Barnes & Noble Education blogs are helpful professionally. The latter is especially interesting if the target market you work in is primarily made up of college students. If you like random fun facts and information the, “Stuff You Should Know” blog will pull you in.

Thanks for all of your hard work, Grant!
