Volunteer Spotlight: Kendra Minser

March 13, 2018 9:28PM

Everything that AMA Minnesota offers would not be possible without the amazing work of our volunteers. Often their work is done behind the scenes. To thank our volunteers and bring their efforts to light, we regularly showcase them in a Volunteer Spotlight.

Kendra is a new member who quickly became a volunteer for AMA MN. Here's what she had to say about her AMA MN experience so far.

Why did you decide to kick your AMA membership to the next level by becoming a volunteer?
I really enjoyed AMA programming events and workshops, and the networking opportunities those events offered. I found I wanted to network with other AMA members even outside of those events. I also wanted to share the story of why I chose to join AMA and encourage others to join, too.

So what drew you to AMA Minnesota?
I joined AMA as a senior at the University of St. Thomas. The faculty leader of my marketing club recommended networking and participating in learning opportunities outside of school. You can only learn so much in a classroom!  I did a bit of research before choosing AMA. Other communities or groups seemed less appealing. I felt AMA would help me gain knowledge of real-life marketing problems and solutions, along with networking opportunities. AMA itself is a national community, so I knew the Minnesota chapter would be an excellent, trustworthy source to help me to grow professionally.

What are you most excited about working on as an AMA MN volunteer?
Coming up with ideas for new member events and planning the events. It’s exciting. And, of course, meeting new people and sharing my AMA story.

Tell us about your day job.
I’m the Marketing Coordinator at 360 Financial, a financial advisory firm in Minnetonka. I am a marketing department of one, so I do everything: social media management, SEO optimization, coordinating client events, email marketing – the list goes on. My job, coworkers, and the company are all awesome!

When you’re not working or volunteering, what do you enjoy doing?
I have a 2-year-old dog, Ellie. She’s a mini golden doodle and loves to destroy everything I own, so she keeps me pretty busy. Otherwise, I love hanging out with my friends and experiencing new things, especially traveling.

If you could have one talent, what would it be?
I wish I could draw well. I’ve always been a doodler. I was constantly drawing on the edges of notebooks throughout school. Too bad I can only draw stick people and lop-sided flowers! If I had the ability to draw, I know I would spend my spare time doing that.

What would you say to someone considering joining AMA MN or who is a new member?
Go to as many events as you can and utilize the website! The events are a great way to meet people and to learn more, especially if you’re fairly new to the workforce or in a new job. There are always super nice people greeting people at every event, and the events are held at fabulous locations. The AMA national website has a ton of resources—particularly once you become a member—including templates, tools and free webinars.

My experience with AMA MN has been a great one. I’m glad I joined—and became a volunteer.

Thanks for all your hard work, Kendra!
