AMA Minnesota Collegiate Chapter Update: St. Cloud State University

September 01, 2016

Editor's Note: Starting in September 2016, we will feature a monthly blog post on the AMA collegiate chapters in Minnesota. Each month will give one chapter the opportunity to write content on an upcoming event they’re executing, a spotlight of their Executive Board, a regional or national conference their chapter attended, or an award that their chapter has won. We’re excited to see what the chapters have in store for the upcoming year!

International Collegiate AMA Conference

In March 2016, St. Cloud State University’s Husky AMA made the trip to the International Collegiate Conference in New Orleans, Louisiana. Each year a group of students from Husky AMA attend the conference where we listen to speakers from companies ranging from Coca-Cola executives to various recruiters. We have the opportunity to compete in competitions and receive awards for the work we have accomplished each year. This year a group of eight students flew down together to experience this event. The group was made up of current executive board members as well as future board members and active general members.

Throughout the conference there are many opportunities to get to know other chapters whether it is exchanging T-Shirts in the Social Scramble or visiting booths from other chapters who host fun activities the first night. Some top speakers at the conference included the CMO from the Hershey Company and the Vice-President of Marketing from FedEx. There are many breakout sessions where students are able to choose topics on how to better this chapter such as fundraising, professional development, and community service to name a few. Due to SCSU being a top chapter last year, we were given the opportunity to speak during one of the breakout sessions to the other chapters.

To complete the conference there is a formal banquet where awards are given to each chapter for the work they have done that year. This year was the first time that there was also a small chapter category. SCSU qualified as a small chapter and we received the Exemplary Collegiate Chapter Performance in Communications and Social Impact award. This experience helps to motivate our members and shows them how big AMA is across the country and even internationally. The board members for the coming year made some valuable connections with other chapters all over the U.S. and learned more about how to make AMA more successful at SCSU. It energizes our members to reach for more each year, motivated by the speakers and ideas from other chapters. This annual event is something that our members look forward to each year!
